Experience 2,000 years of Vatican art and history

Michelangelo items and works by Bernini, Giotto, and others. Artwork dating back to the third century. From the venerated relics (bone fragments) of Saint Peter to items from the election of Pope Benedict XVI, this exhibit comprises one of the largest Vatican collections ever to tour North America. Many items have never before been on public view. From culture to history to art, explore how the Papacy has impacted-and been impacted-by the world throughout the centuries.

Exhibition Gallery Layout and Artistic Highlights

Vatican Splendors from Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Swiss Guard features approximately 200 works of art and historically significant objects, many of which have never left the Vatican.

The exhibition is organized into four thematic sections that illustrate the evolution of the Church and its papacy beginning with Saint Peter through the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI, with special emphasis on the founding 500 years ago of the Renaissance (current) Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Papal Swiss Guard and the Vatican Museums. The objects are presented in galleries and recreated environments that enhance the visitor's understanding of their historical and artistic significance.

Exhibition designers want visitors to feel transported to the Vatican, from the underground catacombs where the remains of Saint Peter were discovered to the magnificent papal chambers found above ground. From the sights and sounds of the grand Basilica to a touchable cast of John Paul II’s hand, the exhibition is a multi-sensory experience.

Sistine Chapel Exhibit Room

Examines the ceremony surrounding the death of a pope, and the process of papal succession—which takes place within the Chapel.

Painting the Sistine Chapel

One of the exhibition's most dramatic rooms, this recreated environment takes visitors onto the scaffolding near the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, to explore how Michelangelo painted his famous frescoes.

The Ancient Basilica

Bust of An Angel, a colorful mosaic attributed to the great 14th century painter, Giotto, is displayed in this gallery, along with architectural drawings, paintings, and castings, telling the story of the original Saint Peter's Basilica built by the Roman emperor, Constantine.

Stories of the Popes

With special emphasis on Pope John Paul II and today's pope, Benedict XVI, gallery showcases John Paul II's pastoral staff and cope worn for the Jubilee year celebration, along with a special bronze cast of John Paul II's hand, created just prior to his passing.

A portrait of Benedict XVI, and the pope's chasuble, miter, and "Fisherman's Ring" bid farewell to visitors as they re-enter the world with a new view of the role of the Church and Papacy in the world.

1. What are the hours of the exhibition?

Museum hours during this exhibit: Mon, Wed-Sat: 10-5; Tue. 10-8, Sun 11-5. Last entry 90 minutes before closing. All dates and times subject to change without notice.

2. How long does it take to go through your galleries?

Most visitors spend between one and two hours viewing the exhibitions.

3. What ages are appropriate?

Exhibitions are for all ages.

4. Do you offer wheelchairs?

Standard wheelchairs and strollers are available at the information desk on the first floor. The galleries are handicap accessible. Note: a limited number of wheelchairs are available. The entire History Center is accessible to all visitors.

5. Are there individual tours?

All tours are self-guided.

6. Is there an Audio Guide?

Yes, audio tour is available for a nominal charge.

7. May I bring a stroller?

Strollers are not allowed in the Vatican Splendors exhibition.

8. May I bring my camcorder and my camera?

No, unfortunately, photography is not permitted in the exhibition.
